Anacker, R. L. (Rocky Mountain Laboratory, Hamilton, Mont.), W. T. Haskins, D. B. Lackman, E. Ribi, and E. G. Pickens. Conversion of the phase I antigen of Coxiella burnetii to hapten by phenol treatment. J. Bacteriol. 85:1165-1170. 1963.-Trichloroacetic acid extracts of Coxiella burnetii are converted to hapten by treatment with phenol. Such extracts react, like the original trichloroacetic acid extract, at high dilution in the complement-fixation test and produce zones of precipitate with specific antibody in gel diffusion tests; but, unlike the parent extract, injection of the phenol-treated extract neither induces resistance to challenge in guinea pigs nor antibody formation in guinea pigs, rabbits, or mice. This loss of antigenicity is correlated with removal of protein from the original product.

The Frequency of IgM anti-Coxiella burnetii (Q fever) Antibodies among Slaughterhouse Workers in Kerman city, 2012

Background & Aim: Q fever is an important zoonotic disease caused by infection with Coxiella burnetii, a Gram negative, obligate intracellular bacterium classified within the order Legionellales. Farmers, veterinarians, abattoir workers and laboratory personnel are among persons at risk of Q fever. The aim of this study was to determine frequency of IgM anti-Coxiella burnetii antibodies in slau...

Enhancement of the immunogenicity of phase I antigen of Coxiella burnetii.

The immunogenicity of the soluble phase I antigen of Coxiella burnetii for guinea pigs was enhanced by a nuclease-resistant complex of polyriboinosinic-polyribocytidylic acid, poly-L-lysine, and carboxymethyl cellulose.

Monoclonal antibodies distinguish phase variants of Coxiella burnetii.

Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) directed against phase I and II variants of Coxiella burnetii were produced by fusing myeloma SP2/O-AG 14 cells with spleen cells from mice immunized with the chloroform-methanol extraction residue of phase I whole cells. Two hybridoma clones which distinguished the phase variants by microimmunofluorescence assay were isolated and characterized. The MAbs showing spe...

Lipopolysaccharide variation in Coxiella burnetti: intrastrain heterogeneity in structure and antigenicity.

We isolated lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) from phase variants of Coxiella burnetii Nine Mile and compared the isolated LPS and C. burnetii cells by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting. The LPSs were found to be the predominant component which varied structurally and antigenically between virulent phase I and avirulent phase II. A comparison of techniques hi...
